Which playable Skyrim faction would you overhaul?

As the title states, I'd like to know which faction would you completely overhaul? What about the faction would you change and why? For example I've always been bummed out by the fact that the Bard's college only features one short pitiful dungeon crawl. At no point do you ever get to perform, dance, or even play an instrument, and thats a bummer considering bards are one of my favorite archetypes. But back to you. What would you overhaul?

  • No question, it's got to be the College of Winterhold.

"But Pixel! How could you forget about the Bard's College?!"

I didn't. Although it would have been kinda cool to have a legit Bard's College quest, I'm nowhere near as interested in becoming a singer as I am a mage, and both questlines were extremely disappointing

The magnificant "College of Winterhold" passed down through Nordic legend is bascially the "College of Point-And-Follow" where you don't actually have to be a mage to become the archmage. This is totally lame. Additionally, the College barely feels like a school or place of study at all. There are literally more teachers than students! WHAT THE ACTUAL F%@$?!?!?!

Also, *SPOILER ALERT* Ancano is the villain. Oh wait . . . it isn't a spoiler because it was bltatantly made clear as soon as you walk into the College. Additionally, the story itself makes no sense. Why would the oh-so-great-and-powerful Psijic Order choose some novice to do their work for them, when they had the pick of the actual most powerful wizards in all of freakin' Skyrim? I went to the College hoping to get a Hogwarts-esque experience where I could actually benefit from their teachings and really learn to be a mage. NOPE. Instead it was "Oh look! A new recruit! Off to a dangerous ruin with you, and oh by the way, have fun facing one of the most deadly Dragon Priests in history that even the best mage in the entirety of Skyrim could not defeat with an entire freakin' group of the other most powerful mages in Skyrim."

I realize I've ranted a bit, but really this quest is pretty much the definition of disappointing, and it's even more of a letdown since magic is one of the largest parts of the Elder Scrolls universe.

    • Yeah it really does suck. I mean the fact that you can be archmage without mage abilities is just preposterous. There is a mod on PC that fixes a ton of the issues you had with it called "Immersive College of Winterhold", that makes you learn spells by casting them a bunch of times, add students that walk around the facility (I don't know if you've noiticed, but in vanilla there are more teachers than students), and it just makes the college feel not only more lively, but also more interesting. Now that I have this mod I actually look forward to my mage playthrough, I don't put it off simply because I would have to go through the questline again. In vanilla, the college is simply the worse long questline in the game and I completely agree with your points.

      • Three mods come to mind that add even more students. One simply called "College Students" adds about 15 more apprentices of various races. The second is called Inconsequential NPCs which adds a whole slew of new NPCs with their own unique banter, many of which reside at the college. Last is my all time favorite mod "Interesting NPCs which adds a shit ton of NPCs, many of whom have unique quests and all of which have unique dialogue. All together these mods really make the college feel like a school.

        • There's also Magical College of Winterhold, which revamps the design of the College to be more of a school, add in guards, students, etc, and it's available for all three consoles

  • Well, if I had to choose 100% the bard college. But, rather, I would completely remove the companions as a joinable faction or just make them a smaller one with a few quests. Why? Because it's so Nord hero centric, any warrior of another race that might be great at fighting still doesn't fit because all of them are proud nords. I mean, make an argonian berserker and tell me if it feels right. Instead, I would personally add an actual fighters guild to Skyrim, so any character who happens to be a good fighter fits in, and then maybe have the companions as a small joinable faction or completely remove the "joinable" part. I wouldn't remove them completely because that would breaking the lore, so I think we all know why that wouldn't be a good thing :P

    • Eh, if Henatier can be born with the soul of a Nord in the body of an Elf....

  • Only thing the bards college does right is not making your their new boss.

  • College of Winterhold, let's be honest here it kinda sucks, the Ancano fight is boring, you don't really practice your magical properties besides from casting a ward in the beginning, the only part I found enjoyable is the labyrinthian but the only reason you join the college is that you need most of the spells they sell for the late game

    • Agreed

  • Generally Skyrim's factions aren't nearly as immersive as Oblivion's. But for me the greatest offender is the Thieves' Guild - you barely do any actual stealing! You're basically turned into Maven Black Briar's bitch, and then there's the stupid Mercer bit halfway through... it's just so disappointing compared to Oblivion, which was a series of interesting heists to get the Gray Fox's attention, culminating in stealing an Elder Scroll, with a really interesting twist at the end which actually justifies you in becoming the new leader of the Thieves' Guild! Comparing Oblivion's and Skyrim's Thieves' Guilds really highlights the plot problems of Skyrim's version as well...

Skyrim in general suffered the problem of just having you run through a series of dungeon crawls which end up with you being the new leader of the faction for no real reason, but at least in the Dark Brotherhood you actually assassinated people, whereas in the Thieves' Guild you barely do any stealing at all.
