Utmost salutations to you, my dear scholar. All around Skyrim, and other places, are various ancient tomes and scrolls containing powerful magical properties. As a representative to the College of Winterhold and a friend to Urag gro-Shub, we ask that you mighty adventurers and seekers of archaic knowledge might be able to oblige us and acquire certain...ah...artifacts, shall we say, to procure within the College and keep them out of the hands of the wicked, and so we might study and learn from them further. Enough of my incessant rambling, though. You did not come here to listen to the words of Fimvul, but to seek arcane might.

Welcome to...

The Scholar's Archive

There are numerous tomes, scrolls, and fonts of hidden knowledge scattered around Skyrim's frozen tundras. Urag gro-Shub and other members of the College of Winterhold constantly have different needs and desires, each clamoring for various legendary secrets to further their individual goals. As their representative, I, Fimvul, will do my best to mete out each requirement by requesting they be found and taken to the College of Winterhold. You will, of course, be compensated, handsomely. There are, however, a few guidelines which I probably should go over before you undertake these monotonous but noble quests, so to speak.

In order to accept and embark upon one of these Quests for Knowledge, shall we say, you must first bend to a set of rules and restrictions. Some of these tasks will have more specific additional rules, but all will fall under four basic and simple guidelines you must keep in mind.

Rule 1.) To embark upon a new task, you must first report to the College of Winterhold and speak to the Scholar for whom this quest is tailored. (Example: if you are attempting to find a book for Urag gro-Shub, you must speak to Urag gro-Shub and learn of its location before you are allowed to search for the book.)

Rule 2.) To embark upon a new task, you must first either finish OR abandon your current task. You cannot undertake more than one task at the same time. (Example: If you wish to find/turn-in one of the Ancient Falmer Tomes for Urag gro-Shub but are already searching for one of Shalidor's Insights for Urag gro-Shub, you cannot turn in the Ancient Falmer Tomes until you have found and turned-in the work of Shalidor.)

Rule 3.) To receive your reward for a completed task, you must upload a screenshot of your completion of the task. Each task has its own rewards specific to the task itself. (Example: Upon fulfilling the Power of the Elements task for Faralda, you must screenshot either the completed quest in your journal or the Fire Storm Spell in your Spell List.)

Rule 4.) Some of the tasks will have difficulty rankings, indicating they may be more difficult to complete. As you complete tasks, you will earn Psijic Endeavor Points, which will rank up your level, allowing you to complete the more difficult tasks and earn better rewards. (Example: You just turned in the books The Last King of the AyleidsThe Night of Tears, and Fragment: On Artaeum and received 5 Psijic Endeavor Points, which ranks you up to Adept Scholar, which means you can now accept and undertake the mission to bring Urag the book Lost Legends and begin the quest Forbidden Legends and reassemble the Gauldur Amulet [Fimvul's Notes: If you use the mod "Immersive College of Winterhold, when you complete the quest, you can, to make it more immersive, place the Gauldur Amulet in one of the display cases, thereby concluding that Urag has collected it within the College, if you wish] and then return to Urag and submit your screenshot for your rewards.)

Now that you know the Rules and Guidelines covering the majority of these tasks, it might help to know from which members of the College you will be completing these tasks for:

Savos Aren

The current Arch-Mage, Savos Aren, has many tasks for you to undertake, though his tend to be of the more difficult variety, requiring you to delve into ancient tombs and ruins to procure his requested item(s). However, as the Arch-Mage, he can provide more glorious rewards for completing his tasks.

Tolfdir

Tolfdir is the Alteration Scholar and a Master-level Wizard within the College of Winterhold. He can provide you with tasks to locate Spell Tomes and, when your Psjic Rank reaches high enough levels, he can even send you to fetch powerful Alteration Staffs. If your focus is Alteration magic in any way, completing his tasks can greatly benefit you.

Phinis Gestor

As the authority on Conjuration Magic in Skyrim and the College of Winterhold, Phinis Gestor knows many secrets about Conjuration that most do not. There are, however, things even he doesn't know, which is why he may ask you to find various tomes of magic scattered across Skryim. He may even eventually find word of powerful staffs that he might ask you to collect for him.

Faralda

Faralda is a Master Destruction Mage and a Scholar of the College of Winterhold, and as such, there are always new Destruction Spells that she wishes to acquire to keep her arsenal up-to-date. As time progresses, you may find yourself dealing with more and more difficult, but more and more rewarding, tasks from her as well.

Sergius Turrianus

As perhaps the most accomplished Enchanter in all of Skyrim, Sergius Turranius often doesn't need anything, since he can make do with his own abilities. He might, however, hear about an artifact with a powerful enchantment and ask you to retrieve it for him. His tasks will be difficult as most of them will require dungeon diving to find an item whose name, appearance, and enchantment you will not know until you've found it and returned to him. The rewards for his tasks, however, are always fulfilling.

Drevis Neloren

Drevis Neloren fancies himself the most powerful Illusion mage in Tamriel. Even he, however, has some difficulty with the most powerful Illusion Spells. If you help him find certain pieces of magic, he may eventually lead you to those powerful spells even he is unable to master.

Colette Marence

Colette Marence is one of the most gifted healers in Skyrim, but her mind is as feeble as she is. As such, she seems to occasionally misplace one of her works and asks that you find it before someone else does. She may even teach you some of the secrets she's learned through the years if you help her enough.

Arniel Gane

Though not a Master Wizard, Arniel Gane is an intelligent Scholar in his own right. He occasionally has tasks for you to complete and has his own motives and rewards for the things he asks you to do. Last I knew, he was studying the Dwemer, so you may find yourself exploring Dwemer Ruins. As such, his tasks are labeled in the more difficult categories, with more appropriate rewards to compensate.

Enthir

Though he is only a Scholar, Enthir's reputation as a procurer of illegal goods - AKA, a Black Market Merchant - have made him notorious within the College, though no one can prove he has anything to do with it. If you can gain his trust - I know not how - he might have tasks for you to complete, with rich rewards all but guaranteed.

Urag gro-Shub

Urag gro-Shub is an Elder Orsimer Mage and the Master of the Arcanaeum. He is always on the new hunt for books, scrolls, and manuscripts and will provide meager and monotonous tasks for each. He may occasionally be given a book that is associated with another quest in Skyrim and you might be able to do a task specific to that quest then (such as with Forbidden Legends and the book Lost Legends). He may also have other tasks of varying difficulties for you complete as your Psijic Rank increases. Most of the tasks you complete will probably come from Urag.

Hooded Mage

As you travel across Skyrim, you may hear whispers about powerful tomes of knowledge or legendary artifacts lost to time. These whispers come from anonymous sources and you must have achieved at least the first Psijic Rank in order to undertake any of theses tasks. Each task has its own difficulties and requirements, and its own backgrounds beyond the obvious. Complete these for much greater rewards than any other task.

Now, you may be wondering how/where do I start? It's simple.

There are a few different ways. The easiest and most common way to become a Scholar and begin touring Skyrim to find these hidden troves of magic is, quite obviously, to simply join the College of Winterhold. Simply start and complete the quest First Lessons and you'll become a Scholar and have full access to The Scholar's Archive. A less common but still well-known method is to join The Lore Group. Here, you can undertake tasks from me, Fimvul, directly, and work around The Scholar's Archive. However, doing this bypasses the Psijic Endeavor Points, so all you'll receive are the basic rewards, so I don't recommend it unless you just want quick rewards and don't care about the nitty-gritty stuff. The only other way to become a Scholar and begin undertaking some of the tasks is to find a way into the College without starting the quest First Lessons, such as jumping up through the Midden underneath the College (it's tricky to get the angle right to hit the ledge, but it can be done). Using this method, there are still a few NPCs you can speak with and thus complete tasks for them, but you will be severely limited in what you're able to do, so this method is even less advisable unless you're trying to roleplay a character who doesn't want to study magic, but wants to surround himself with the knowledge of magic (it could happen, I guess, like an anti-mage warrior, or something; humor me here).

Now that we've gone over the Rules and Guidelines, the NPCs who may have tasks available to complete, and how to actually become a Scholar, let's get right into the good stuff.

As time progresses, old tasks - whether or not they are completed - will be removed and new ones will be added. Ones that are left unfinished may appear again on the board, but not necessarily. If you have already started a task and it is removed from the board before you complete it, you are still able to turn it in. Each task can be completed only once, but can be undertaken by multiple characters. This adds an air of competition, as the Scholar who is first to find whatever he seeks is the only one to receive rewards. There will ALWAYS be at least 3 basic tasks, as well as at least 3 more difficult tasks. Specifics rules, requirements, restrictions, and rewards will be displayed with each task, but be forewarned: some tasks might not specifically say for whom it is, so you may have to guess based on the item itself!

Before we actually get into the tasks themselves, let me explain a bit more on the Psijic Endeavor Points and the Psijic Ranks attached to each task.

The completion of a task gives you a predetermined amount of Psijic Endeavor Points, which, after acquiring enough, ranks your Scholar level - or Psijic Rank - up to the next level, allowing you to complete more tasks.

Psijic Ranks

1.) Scholar - Endeavor Points Required: 0

This is the most basic Psijic Rank and allows you to undertake any task (the rank of Scholar is not required for Basic Tasks, as there is one way to get access to tasks without becoming a Scholar in the first place; however, you can only rank up if you've become a Scholar)

2.) Adept Scholar (Psijic Rank 1) - Endeavor Points Required: 15

3.) Expert Scholar (Psijic Rank 2) - Endeavor Points Required: 30

4.) Master Scholar (Psijic Rank 3) - Endeavor Points Required: 60

  • Wow this is much more complex than I had imagined, but I love the way it works! I can't wait to get into this. I might do a full playthrough on the Psijic Monk build that myslf, Percival, and Brosis did awhile back.

    • Looking forward to it

    • It was originally simpler but as I started writing it up, I realized I could really delve into some intricacies with working it through the game mechanics and what resources we have. I still have things planned but I need some people to start participating before I go any further

  • I completed the Oak Flesh book retrieval. Should have it posted after work.

  • Damn, Fimvul. You've outdone yourself. I love how it's complex but like - it's like magic. It just works. Definetly going to do this after the Contest.

  • The Spell Tome of Oakflesh has been successfully recovered from Shroud Hearth Barrow. No small number of draugr and mischievous grave robbers were incinerated in the process.
