The Way of the Voice(s)

Skyrim features a silent protagonist at launch, but it's almost 9 years since 11/11/11. Surely, I cannot be the only one dissatisfied with the unsettling silence accompanying every dialogue choice. Even worse since we're roleplayers! We play characters and unless being mute is part of the character, a character ought to have a voice to make them feel real and rounded out.

So for your characters, what sort of voice do you have for them? Do you describe them as having particular vocal qualities, or, as with faceclaims, you use a voice claim and say that your characters have the voice of some other established character? An example for that would be "My OC Erik McDragonslayer has the voice of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series!" or something like that. Interested to hear what kind of voices you have in mind for your characters.

  • Oh this is a great topic that I’m surprised doesn’t get discussed more often. I’ve actually messed around when character voices quite a lot, and like you I do have a general idea of what my characters ought to sound like.

A long time ago I came across a mod called PC head tracking and voice set. It allows you to imbue your character with one of dozens upon dozens of npc voices, and I believe it even let’s you sample and store voices from any npc you encounter.

  • For the most part I try to extrapolate from the little grunts and shouts Bethesda provides what my characters would sound like talking. Admittedly this isn’t easy. There’s very little to go on and what Bethesda has provided does. Or sound all that good.

  • Interesting discussion, it's something I guess I've never consciously thought about before.

Similar to what the others were saying I suppose I extrapolate the voice from the PC's grunts into the full voiceset that the NPCs use in my head.

Would be interesting (though quite the undertaking) to see a mod that adds voiced lines to all the dialog choices!
