Event Build: The Reaper of Souls

Greetings all. Welcome to my spooky build for the equally spooky month of October. This is based off of the mighty warrior of night called the Grim Reaper. This build draws on aspects from all different forms of Death, from the mystical Horseman of the Apocalypse to the robed Thanatos, the Greek Aspect of Death. Enjoy!!

Life is temporary. Death is eternal. Life is a beautiful thing. Death has beauty too. Life plays with you. Death waits in the shadows. Life is curious. Death is certain. Life waits with you now. Death is coming. Life waves goodbye as Death takes your hand.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Race: Orc

Orsimer provide lots of good skills and the Berserker Rage ability justs makes you unstoppable. Other viable options are Nords, with the starting skills and Battlecry or the Redguards with the stamina boost.

Standing Stone: The Lord Stone

This stone gives you even more damage resistance, especially against mages, who can really take you down quickly. Especially necromancers, they defeat Death.

Att. Spread: 0/2/1

This will let you be tanky and perform a fair amount of power attacks. Letting you dispatch enemies quickly without taking to much damage.

Quests: Boethiah's Calling

The build uses the Ebony Mail as a main piece of armor. You kinda need to do this quest to get it.

Heavy Armor: The build utillizes Heavy Armor as the choice source of protection. The build wears the Ebony Mail, Ebony Gloves and Helmet, and Daedric Gauntlets. Recommended enchants include: Fortify Heavy Armor, Fortify Two-Handed and Resist Poison/Magic.

Two-Handed: The build uses a Daedric Battleaxe to dish out lots of damage onto foes. The axe is augmented by the perks and the enchants laid on it. Recommended enchants include: Absorb Stamina and Soul Trap.

Smithing: This skill is just to craft and improve the Ebony Armor you get.

Conjuration: This skill is important as it allows you to cast Soul Trap with ease and gives you access to the Atronach Forge in the Midden of the College of Winterhold. The forge will allow you to conjure your Daedric Gloves and Battleaxe without having to spend a perk point. You can forgo this and just put an extra point into smithing if you like.

Enchanting: This will use your hard earned souls to properly enchant you gear. Jewelty recommended for the build include an Amulet of Arkay and Ring of Fortify Carry Weight.

The build focuses on rushing enemies before one-twoing them into Oblivion. Your main strategies are to seek cover where, you can easily ambush and focus the ranged foes. Mages can cause quite the problem unless you have good enchants. Beware of over pushing yourself. This build can burst down enemies but is can also be bursted down quickly. There are two really fun ways to play this build.

The first is Judge, Jury and Executioner. Basically cure the world of people who wronged you using your skills. This playstyle doesn't fit with the whole avatar of death theme but still is fun.

You could also play a Contract Killer style. Basically, the rules are, you can only kill NPC's you are told to via a quest or quest marker. You can of course kill people if you need to to progress. Ex. Arvel in Bleakfalls Barrow.

When in a tight spot, using fear spells or Battlecry (If playing a Nord) can help alleviate pressure.

Additional quests include the Dark Brotherhood Questline and the Dawnguard Questline (With no particular alliance). The Civil War is also good as where there is war, there is Death.

Well, there you are, hope you enjoyed this mini-build. This was for the build event of Halloween 2018. Again, this was inspired by the many Grim Reapers from mythologies around the world. Make sure to chack out other builds during from this event. There are some really great ones. For now, I'll leave you with a poem.

Because I could not stop for Death-
He kindly stopped for me-
The Carriage held but just Ourselves-
And Immortality.

We slowly drove- He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility-

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess- in the Ring-
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain-
We passed the Setting Sun-

Or rather- He passed us-
The Dews drew quivering and chill-
For only Gossamer, my Gown-
My Tippet- only Tulle-

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground-
The Roof was scarcely visible-
The Cornice- in the Ground-

Since then- 'tis Centuries- and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity-

  • Well done Percival, love your mythology builds

  • Incredible work! This build is so short and to the point but also conveys the character really well. Did you right that first intro paragraph about life v death? Man, that was chilling. Cool idea for the roleplaying as well: only killing those you are told to by a quest marker or other NPC. It's like allowing fate to guide you.

Also, if I played this character and did the Dawnguard quests, I'd probably side with the Dawnguard since those Vampires have evaded death for long enough . . .

Anyway awesome build thank you so much for entering into the event!

    • Thanks all. Yeah Pixel, I did write that starter paragraph. It was going to be longer but I didn't want to overwhelm the rest of the build. I agree with you with the point with the Dawnguard. I sided with them as well but wanted to leave it open.
