Wyndelius Gatharian was an idiot. Who in Oblivion stays in a barrow for years finding nothing, only to go insane from either the isolation or the potion he consumed to create his spectral appearance? He didn't know when to quit, and that got him killed.
Funny thing is, the villagers in Ivarstead did in fact have the Claw he was searching for. If only he'd asked.
Dangerous tombs and relic-filled dungeons like this have valuable treasure that can bolster Ararvyne's pockets, and give him more access to the tools he needs. Not to mention the training he gets from slaying difficult enemies.
