Classes of the Elder Scrolls

Personally, as an RPG fan, I love when games have a good class system or progression. Since the Elder Scrolls are a little more open their class "system" is basically "do whatever you want." However, they have given us pre-made archetypes in the past. A lot of my characters are me trying to recreate those classes but with my own spin on them. So, what's your favorite Elder Scrolls class? Why? Are there any you would change, remove, or add? What type of skills and roleplay characteristics go with these classes? Are there any current builds that serve as the prime example for these classes? I'm partially looking for inspiration, partially just trying to see how others' views of these classes compare with mine. Let's discuss. The classes are as follows:

  1. Acrobat
  2. Agent
  3. Archer
  4. Assassin
  5. Barbarian
  6. Bard
  7. Battlemage
  8. Crusader
  9. Healer
  10. Knight
  11. Mage
  12. Monk
  13. Nightblade
  14. Pilgrim
  15. Rogue
  16. Scout
  17. Sorcerer
  18. Spellsword
  19. Thief
  20. Warrior
  21. Witchhunter

  • I've always been a fan of assassin characters and it's the only archetype I would play back in the day when Skyrim first came out. I initially played on the PS3 and the only thing I would play is a Khajiit assassin with a dagger and bow. Even now, after trying out a plethora of archetypes on the PC, the assassin will always be my favorite. Nothing comes close to the excitement you feel after clearing out a whole bandit camp without being spotted once. It is a high risk, high reward playstyle where you do lots of damage and also takes lots of damage, but that forces you to play strategically and patiently which is extremely enjoyable.

    What's your favorite archetype?

    • Mine is always changing depending on what my current influences are. For example, right now I am reading Mistborn so I'm much more interested in thievery, stealth, and alchemy. In fact, part of what sparked this question for me was the blatant lack of true rogue builds on the internet. I feel like a Rogue in the Elder Scrolls is a very misunderstood and under represented archetype. It's more of a duelist/swaahbuckler with some trickery than straight thief or brigand.

      • Perhaps I’ll have a rogue build by you to be excited for?

        • A character will certainly be played. Whether or not a build will be published? That is another question that I do not know the answer to.

      • To me rogues are daring outlaws and agile, devious fighters. They’re the kind of characters who’d take pride in the hefty bounties over their heads, and the type of fighters who’d laugh at the notion of a fair fight.

  • I tend to take the base classes and put my own spin on things either mechanically or roleplay wise.

Some good examples out of my own collection would be the night reaver. A build that plays very similarly to a witch hunter, but with added twists like necromancy to suite a vampire hunting witch hunters using their own tactics against them.

  • What about something like a Bard? How does one translate musical talent to a character in the Elder Scrolls and make it part of his/her combat and style?

  • Really intrigued to see your takes on these. This reminds me a bit of PCOutcast's venture into making all 21 and his were awesome.

In terms of favorite? No surprise but mine is Battlemage. Has been my to to class for any ES game and main class to really roleplay.

Would love to talk some ideas of some of the classes if you want.

    • I’ve always defined a battle mage as magic users who prefer to be in the thick of battle armed with devastating close range spells.

      • I always feel like my and the Elder Scrolls' opinion of Battlemage and Spellsword are flipped. I think of battlemage as heavy armor tank with big beefy spells and a spell sword as more of a bladesman with augmenting magic. However, according to the "classes" page on oblivion and morrowind, they seem to have those flipped. Not exactly but just about.
