How do you guys choose who to roleplay as?

I'm particularly new to this site and I have been watching every single build and discussion. This is quite a good community. My question is, how do you guys choose the character build or race you want to roleplay as. It seems that I can't stick to one character. I believe I have contracted restartitis. I have tried hawk feathers, cure disease potions and every single shrine. But none worked. I hope some of you can help me with this disease.

  • I usually decide on a whim. I sometimes get this really cool idea for a playthrough, but before I can begin to play as a character, I have to have an idea as to what I want this character to do. I can't just "make" a character and throw him out into the world; I usually plan his story ahead of time. Of course, you don't always follow that story path, but it's good to get a general idea as to what you want to do with this character.

Another method I've found particularly helpful in coming up with interesting new ways to play characters is using mods to add new spells, equipment, quests. etc. to make a unique playthrough. Recently I've come to using cheats and god items to generate new ways to facilitate RP. An example of this would be a necromancer who sacrifices the bodies of the dead and gains skill levels based on who was sacrificed.

    • Serjo, how do you create such good character profiles like Ararvyne Varam? Any advice or tutorial you could share? BTW, thanks for the reply.

TES Profile: Ararvyne Varam, the Daedric Templar
Greetings, sera. Blackblood here with the SECOND return of an old favorite of mine. Quite a while ago I released my very first Character Profile call…
  • A lot of people stick to one character for the sake of creating something they can share with others, like a build.

I have a hunch you’ve likely tried many different people’s builds but have always found something lacking in each. Maybe a character of your own creation, incorporating everything you enjoy from other builds, is just what you need.

    • Can you share any tips or any tutorial of how you create your character's race, skills, perks? BTW, thanks for the reply.

  • I try to start with a combat style personally.  Combat is such a huge part of any rpg really that since it is going to be something you're doing all the time it better be something you enjoy doing.  From there, if you're making your own original character, work outward.  If you want to go archery decide why your character is an archer and then move into race.  Perhaps an orc huntress from one of the strongholds or a bosmer moving across Tamriel in search of big game.  Two handed more your style?  Perhaps a redguard sword dancer or a khajiit caravan guard.  Sword and shield?  A breton knight from High Rock or a Nord former housecarl whose thane has died and now his turn to make a name for himself.  Sword and spell?  A dunmer assassin seeking vengeance on the Stormcloaks or an Altmer necromamcer in search of power that uses a bound sword.

It can be easy to fall into restartitis.  I did for years.  It took this site and the fine folks and their encouragement to get me to stick to a character.  Course now I try to play on Twitch as often as I can LOL.  Anyway, the combat style method works for me as it gives me something to focus on.  Once I've figured that out I can usually figure out support skills and a basic character idea.  I've put a lot of basics into paper but yet to acrually finish a posted build.  Enough rambling from me.
