FNV Engineer

This build is based off the Engineer class of Team Fortress 2. The recommended DLCs are Old World Blues, Dead Money, and Lonesome Road.

"Hey look, buddy, I'm an Engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like 'What is beauty?', because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems. For instance, how do I stop some big mean mother-hubber' from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer: use a gun. And if that don't work? Use more gun."

Story: Born in an old vault in the Texas Commonwealth, you grew up helping fix machines that kept the vault livable and run a small shop that was built by your grandfather which you inherited ownership of when you reached adulthood. It was a small shop, selling and buying pieces of things that could be used for crafting and doing repair services for robots and the like. In your free time, you read pre-war books that explained the mechanics of the old machines before the Great War. It was a peaceful and decent way to make caps, but it was god-awful boring. You wanted excitement, to see the rest of the commonwealth and have adventures. The shop's life was so weak, you left the door unlocked after closing hours for a month and no one stole a thing. Often you thought of making the shop your tomb, wondering if you would spend the rest of your life not knowing where to start your adventure and wondered if you would end up as target practice for raiders or in the stomach of a deathclaw.

One day a wanderer near his twilight years came to your shop to sell anything he could so he could have enough money to retire. You noticed he pulled out a small dinosaur toy and asked him where he got that. He said that in the Mojave Wasteland there was a small town called Novac, which had Dinky the T-Rex, a dinosaur landmark that miraculously remained untouched from the Great War two centuries ago. What caught your attention was when the wanderer went on saying that Novac was a speck compared to the size and beauty of New Vegas, a pre-war city reclaiming its former glory that attracted men and women all over the Mojave who seek for the promise of money and power that can only be gained by the charming, smart, or lucky. What stood out of the resurrected city was the Lucky 38, a tower that's splendor can be seen throughout the Mojave and is the home New Vegas' mysterious ruler, Mr. House.

After hearing the old man's story, you finally knew where to start your adventure. After closing your shop and packing provisions like guns, food, and your lucky pre-war construction helmet, your set out west for New Vegas. It was a hard trek to the Mojave, paying mercenaries to protect you through certain routes, finding shelter from radiation storms, running and gunning geckos, and selling a few weapons to get the caps for food. You found work as a courier of the Mojave Express, where you would learn the layout of the Mojave and earn some caps. To your amazement, you were given a platinum chip that had to be delivered to New Vegas. However, your moment of excitement ended when left you Prim, only to get shot and left for dead in Good Springs. You would have died had your construction helmet not slowed the bullet. After waking up from a small comma, licking your wounds and discarding you now useless helmet, you set out to get the chip from the city slicker who shot you.

SPECIAL: Strength 4, Perception 6, Endurance 5, Charisma 6, Intelligence 9, Agility 6, Luck 4

Traits: Good Natured, Trigger Disciple, Four Eyes, and/or Skilled

Tag Skills: Science, Guns, Repair

Major Skills: Science, Guns, Repair

Minor Skills: Barter, Energy Weapons, Speech

Perks: Educated, Strong Back (after the Strength implant), Hand Loader, Robotics Expert, Math Wrath, Shotgun Surgeon, Jury Rigging, Finesse, Commando, Vigilant Recycler, Meltdown, Gunslinger, Pack Rat, Laser Commander.

DLC Perks: Certified Tech and And Stay Back.

Equipment:

Non-revolver pistols; energy and regular. The basic 9mm is a good start, until you get the 10mm, or better yet Maria. Pew Pew makes a good energy pistol . . . if you don't mind its Action Point cost. The pulse gun is perfect against robots and power armor. If you have Old Worlds Blues, the Sonic Emitter is a gem.

A shotgun; the lever-action works well.

An energy laser rifle, but nothing with scopes like the gauss and holorifles. The AER14 and LAER are good choices

A repairman jumpsuit. Any light armor like leather is recommenced if you need better protection, but still, have plenty of carrying space. Power armor. The Gannon family Tesla armor is a good choice because the light-bulb things on the shoulders make it look technologically advanced.

And most importantly the construction helmet. One can be found in the train tunnel near the Nellis Air Force Base (Boomers HQ). In Dead Money, two are in the service route on the shelf in Puesta del Sol North, and two are outside the north most tunnel entrance. In Old World Blues, one can be found outside the Saturnite Alloy Research Facility and two inside. And in Lonesome Road, one can be found next to the locker containing the industrial hand outside the Ashton silo control station, and two down the road to the left behind a broken building next to a workbench.

Implants: Intelligence, Endurance, Sub-Dermal Armor, Strength, Agility, and Monocyte Breeder

Companions: ED-E or Rex are good because it makes sense to have a technology-ish companion. Arcade or Veronica make good human companions because like the Engineer, they both have an advanced understanding of technology and very witty one-liners.

Faction: You can join any of the main factions except the Legion because of their staunch opposition to technology. For minor factions, Followers of the Apocalypse (FA), and/or Boomers are good choices.  Not the Brotherhood of Steel; they're technology hoarders.

Recommended Quests: It would be fitting to do quests that involve more use of tinkering and thinking rather than guns. Any Boomer quest, any FA quest, any Bos quest, Come Fly With Me, ED-E My Love, For Auld Lang Syne (you will need to do this if you want the Gannon Tesla armor), I Could Make You Care, Nothin' But a Hound Dog, That Lucky Old Sun, and There Stands the Grass.

For DLC, play Old World Blues if you have it to put your Science skill into work.

Gameplay: It is best to hang back and let your companions be in the front lines of fighting. Also if you have the Meltdown perk, a great energy weapon, and there is a group of enemies to fight, it would be wise to save the game and get a snack before you watch and enjoy what happens next again and again. If you're dealing with a single enemy and your saving cells for your energy gun, use the shotgun, especially if you have Shotgun Surgeon.

And it is a good idea to collect the materials used to make weapon repair kits and what else, keeping a handful, selling the rest.

  • If anybody noticed and/or cared, I decided to update and remove some of the equipment and remove Plasma Spaz for Strong Back

    • I don't play Fallout or Team Fortress, but this looks good!

  • I decided to re-apply Strong Back. I realized it's more useful a crafting build like the Engineer.

    I'm a hypocrite. Judge me.
