WIP Character Builds

We understand making a great character build that others actually want to play is difficult. And while some are comfortable working on their build in private and releasing it when complete, others may desperately need a lot of guiddance along the way. Whats where this section comes in.

In this section you may post any half finished rough draft build your working if you're in need of guidance or just want a place for people to evaluate your work as you work on it. Here are some helpful guidelines to remember

-Ensure you include the term "WIP Build" to your title so it can be more readily distinguisable from completed character builds. Example - WIP Build: The Sneak Archer

-For those posting their WIPs here, please be open to constructive criticism. You wouldnt be posting your work here if you thought it was perfect to begin with, so please make an honest effort to take in criticism.

-For those commenting, dont be an ass. It takes a bit of courage to share ones own creative ideas, so dont ruin it by trying to bring people down. Be mindful of how you critique. Focus on being constructive

-When your build is complete, feel free to move it yourself or let me or an admin know and we'll move it over to where the completed builds reside.

WiP Build: Seeking faith, peace and Sovngarde

Alright! The first part of my narrative driven event build is finished and I would like to hear everyones opinion on it as I continue to work on the rest of it.

Now, before I start, I just wanted to say something to everyone expecting a anti hero vampire build. I did plan it in the beginning, but seeing how Bethesda made the main and the Dawnguard questline, I had to abandon it because it just didn't work out how I wanted it to be. So, I decided to make a kind of build that I wanted to make for a long time, a narrative driven build. A build that follows a character as he develops through the playthrough. This is my first Skyrim build since 2017. and my second Skyrim build overall. So, I hope that you enjoy this little sneak peak.

Torin Guđmarson was sitting on the porch of his house in Helgen as his sister came to him with a pitcher of ale. It was early in the morning and Torin liked to have a cool drink before getting to work in the forest. He was a woodcutter and supplied most of the timber for Helgen. He was also the only bread winner in the house as his father was too old and his sister was sick with a rare disease that bound her to the house.

"Would you like another cup of ale, brother?" asked his sister.

"No." said Torin. "I have to hurry to the woods today. Storm clouds are gathering and the Jarl ordered an oak from me."

As Torin was getting up, the southern gates opened and two Elves came in, riding on their horses. Behind them was the Imperial general in Skyrim, general Tullius. He came to Skyrim to quell the Stormcloak rebellion that was raging for some time. Altough Torin tried to ignore the politics of Skyrim, he was displeased that Helgen was used as an execution stand.

However, this day was different. In one of the carts he spoted the jarl of Windhelm, Ulfric Stormcloak, the leader of the rebels, so called "true sons". Torin went through basic training in the Imperial Legion and was a supporter of the Empire. He had little love for Ulfric.

As Ulfric was laid on the execution block, Torin grabbed his axe and turned to leave Helgen, but stopped as he heard a blood-chilling roar coming from the Jerall Mountains. Everyone stopped and looked as a giant black dragon appeared behind one of the mountain peaks. He swoped down and engulfed some Imperial soldiers in flames. As everyone came back to their senses, panic erupted as people tried to find shelter from the beast. Torin dropped his axe and ran back towards his house. But as the dragon flew overhead, it was hit by a fireball from one of the battlemages and crashed into Torin's house. As the dragon felt pain, it engulfed the entire house in fire.

"NO! Father! Reidun!" he screamed as the dragon turned towards him. He looked the creature deep into the eyes as his heart filled with a need for revenge. He grabbed a sword from one of the fallen Imperial soldiers and rushed towards the dragon., The dragon was faster, however, and whiped his tail, hitting Torin and sending him flying into the wall of a nearby guard tower. Torin tried to rise up, his sight blury. But it was in vain, as he lost hi strength and fell unconscious.

Several hours passed as he opened his eyes, seeing the charred remains of his house. The heavy rain extinguished the flames, but the smell of burned wood was still in the air. He stood up and went into his destroyed home. After moving some debris, he managed to find the bodies of his father and sister.

"I promise you father, I will find him. I promise you sister, I will kill him." he said with tears in his eyes.

Torin then left his home and kneeled down on the porch. He extended his arms towards the sky. "Arkay! Hear me. Forgive me, for I haven't prayed in some time. I shouldn't have left your path. But I pray now. I pray that you give me the strength needed to find this dragon and end him. I pray that you help me keep my mind whole. That I do not stray away. That I do not go feral. On this day, I promise you that I shall find this evil and destroy it. I shall never stray from your path again."

As Torin left Helgen behind him, he turned around and swore that he will return one day and rebuild his home. But, right now, he only had one thing in his sight. Revenge.

While I tried to keep mods to a minimum, there are a few that I think are essential, not just to this build, but to every Skyrim playthrough.

Imperious - Races of Skyrim:: This is a great mod that overhauls the races, focusing on their abilities that are much more lore friendly now.

Ordinator Perks: This is a huge perk overhaul mod that changes the way you pick perks and makes every perk tree unique and fun to try, giving the player many new abilities.

Wintersun - Religion and Worship: Seeing as this event is all about the Aedra adn Daedra, being able to pray to them and receive some abilites and effects is a great addition to the game.

Helgen Reborn: This mod is essential to the narrative side of this build as it allows you to rebuild the town of Helgen into a big playe home/town.

Race: Nord - Being a Nord gives you some great effects, such as 25% frost resistance, 40% damage increase based on your remaining health and after completing the race specific quest, you will get the ability to regain 10% of your Magicka and Stamina per second for 30 seconds once per day.

Standing Stone: Warrior - The Warrior Stone will allow you to learn all combat skills 20% faster.

Major Skills: One - Handed, Heavy Armor, Block

Minor Skills: Alchemy, Smithing, Enchanting

Attributes: Magicka: 0/Health: 4/Stamina: 1

Alignment: Lawful Good

*Note: The stats are used for the entire build, not just the first part.

For the first act of the build, you will only invest in the major skills, with just one perk point in Smithing, so you can make yourself a steel armor set which you will improve on the workbench. A point in Smithing will allow you to improve your weapons and armor better, so you should have a power ranking of 170/180.

Full set of steel armor with a horned helmet. You will make the armor yourself at the Sky Forge. Craft a steel sword as well and then temper your gear at the workbench and the grind stone.

Amulet of Arkay

Fire breath

Unrelenting Force

Whirlwind Sprint

Main Quest

In this first act of the build, the main quest will be the main focus. You will complete it and kill Alduin, avengeing your father and sister. There are a few stop points where you will complete other quests and those are:

After killing your first dragon

Before going after the Elder Scroll

Making a break in these places will stop you from just blitzing through and will allow you to do the other quests, helping the progress feel more organic and realistic.

The Companions & Civil War:

You can start the Companion questline after killing your first dragon. You will make little breaks in the questline before going for the pieces of Wuthrad to do some minor quests and gain some experience and fame among the Companions. The Companion questline will also have a break.

Before becoming a werewolf

During this break, you will go to Solitude to join the Legion. As Torin is a follower of Arkay, who is the patron God of the Legion, and a supporter of the Empire, he will help Skyrim get rid of the Stormcloaks. You will only complete half of the Civil War questline in the first act.

Until you defend Whiterun from the Stormcloaks

After the Battle of Whiterun, you first progress the main quest until you start searching for the Elder Scroll, after which you will finish the Companions questline and let Kodlak into Sovngarde. Remember to cure yourself of lycantrophy.

After becoming the Harbinger of the Companions, it is time to find Alduin and kill him once and for all.

*Note: I will write down the gameplay after finishing the build. I am still looking for way to refresh the way a tank build is played so, if you have any suggestion, feel free to tell me.

  • You have a pretty good start so far. Only thing I could think to focus on, although I know its still a WIP, is more on Arkay, besides just following certain questlines, and maybe see how you can play with his lore and what he represents to tie into your character's build. For example, how would Arkay feel about you becoming a werewolf? (think of the scene with the Priest of Arkay and the graveyard after a werewolf mauled that girl.) Arkay and the dichotomy of life & death certainly has a lot to offer in terms of roleplay, even gameplay. So centralizing the build around Arkay more would certainly help I think.

    • Ah, yes. Thank you for the feedback. I am still looking to include more of Arkay, and I do plan to include him more, with the Wintersun mod. And I will flesh out the werewolf part.

I dont plan of include arkay too much in the first part of the build as it is the "Seeking faith" part of the build.

      • I gotchya. Looking forward to the rest of the build

        • I was also looking to incorporate the Order of Arkay.

          • Careful that that doesn't add too much, you know? Right now, looking at your mechanics and gameplay so far, I see Shor, Kyne, and Talos rather than Arkay. I imagine you'll develop Arkay more as you progress, but Arkay is a healer's god, not necessarily a warrior's god, and not really a god for someone seeking revenge.

            • Yeah, I am watching out for that. But Arkay is also the god of the cicle of life and a big enemy of vampires, the Daedra and all necromancers, and the Order of Arkay also has its military branch, the Knights of the Circle. And Alduins dragon friends are raised back from the dead, and I see that as a offence to Arkay.

I am still putting in ideas and trying to see how they form, so I probably will take some stuff out.

  • First, some of the images are absolutely sublime, especially that dude with the dragon. I also really like the use of the Helgen mod, it's a fun one. I enjoy builds with a narrative direction, I really do...but...

    And now come my howevers.

Careful with the blue font, it's a lovely color, but it is lost in the picture making spreads and banners hard to read. A stark white may actually be easier. Another trick I use when creating these on PowerPoint is to add a subtle glow effect in a darker color to help the font pop. All caps is also straining on the eyes. Also, consider changing the font, if you're going to make such a canonical "Dragonborn" type, why not go for Planewalker, which is the actual ES font? Could be an interesting choice.

Be sure that you're aware of potential build bloat. I don't think you need to say twice to craft steel gear and you certainly don't have to tell us to improve it at a work bench or grindstone. That's the example that most jumped at me when I read through this. I think we, as players, know that when you indicate that you're taking the steel smithing and list your gear as steel, we can draw the proper conclusions. It's little things like that that add some serious length and redundancy to a build. So I suggest that you go over it with a fine-toothed combe as you write and edit and absolutely remove anything that is not necessary to a reader understanding how to play this. I continuously do this with even my published builds. Because you definitely do not catch everything on a first publish.

The backstory is a nice touch, always work to shorten it, but how do you establish that he's Dragonborn? How can he possibly kill Alduin if he doesn't know that he can?

As for fresh ways to play a tank? Don't craft is one of them. Keep your steel gear for the whole game. It'll give your build the challenge of a low AR which will allow you to think before you enter battle, could give a fresh perspective on gameplay.  Think of it even as his armor, fitted for him. I had an amazing Requiem playthrough once, and Requiem had a smelt down feature. I killed thalmor and in a rp moment that was amazing, I smelted their armor and weapons and used that to create a bow that became my character's bow for the entire game. Forged from the blood of the thalmor he killed and used to uphold justice for the Nord People. Yeah, there were better bows in the game, but shit, what an rp moment. Those are some ways you can make a tank fresh.

    • I am still looking for the right font, and I will try out your reccomendation as well as a new color maybe.

I did aim to only use Steel armor. I am also looking to enchant it a bit to protect against magic users, but not too much as I dont want it to become OP. I am still looking for the right place for the equipment list, I was thinking at the end with the gameplay and roleplay part.

I am also looking to expand his backstory a bit which will include some hints at him being a dragonborn. Also, the part where he attacks Alduin is just the heat of the moment, he wasn't really thinking, he just saw a sword and lunged for it. I will try to make this a bit better to show his emotions a bit more. I was also looking to make a RP profile for him.

Thank you for the feedback, Liss. I will definetly take some advice from a master Skyrim builder ;)

Looking forward to what you think once I finish it.

      • I'm no master at all, but thank you for your kindness.

Fonts are so tricky, I have discarded entire builds because I did not find the right font.

I don't mind unperked enchanting, sometimes it's useful for some weakly enchanted gear when you just want AESTHETICS. :D

        • Yeah, I know, but I never really went into enxhanting with Ordinator, so I'd like to see what it has.
