Classes of the Elder Scrolls

Personally, as an RPG fan, I love when games have a good class system or progression. Since the Elder Scrolls are a little more open their class "system" is basically "do whatever you want." However, they have given us pre-made archetypes in the past. A lot of my characters are me trying to recreate those classes but with my own spin on them. So, what's your favorite Elder Scrolls class? Why? Are there any you would change, remove, or add? What type of skills and roleplay characteristics go with these classes? Are there any current builds that serve as the prime example for these classes? I'm partially looking for inspiration, partially just trying to see how others' views of these classes compare with mine. Let's discuss. The classes are as follows:

  1. Acrobat
  2. Agent
  3. Archer
  4. Assassin
  5. Barbarian
  6. Bard
  7. Battlemage
  8. Crusader
  9. Healer
  10. Knight
  11. Mage
  12. Monk
  13. Nightblade
  14. Pilgrim
  15. Rogue
  16. Scout
  17. Sorcerer
  18. Spellsword
  19. Thief
  20. Warrior
  21. Witchhunter

    • I've always thought that a Battlemage uses weapons and spells, but the spells are primarily damage-dealing spells. Whereas with a Spellsword I've always thought that type of character uses spells to augment themselves/their weapons rather than to deal additional physical damage.

    • They’re about as different as a coke is a from a Pepsi

    • Spellswords are mostly fighters with some skill in magic to  supplement or even enhance their combat abilities.

Battlemages to me are close quarter combat mages. Where as normal mages prefer to use their spells at a distance, a battlemage gets right up close and personal with devastating close range spells. They can be proficient with armor and weapons though not likely to the same degree as a spellsword.

  • How do you gents define a bard? Music themed support class or Jacks of all Trades?

    • IDK that I would necessarily think of it as music themed, especially since Skyrim is pretty lacking in that department. (I would love to be able to take a lute and smack someone in the face with it lol). I tend to think of a lot of these more in D&D terms. A bard is a high charisma character, usually the "face" of the party, and offers some damage, usually from ranged, as well as a bit of healing. Translating that into TES terms, I would say a high speech character with archery, restoration, probably light armor, and maybe enchanting or something to help keep their gear relevant.

Of course, that's not necessarily how previous TES games have defined a bard of course. I really don't remember how they were before.

    • They’re kinda both. They’re very much support oriented through the use of singing and music to buff their allies.

They can also support their team by filling in for any role the team is lacking. As Jacks of all trades they dabble in a little bit of everything.

  • Always a fan of Warrior, Knights and Crusaders due to how good they are in tanking and actually endure a prolonged fight, but now, I got myself into a class that combines both magic and physical prowess (although Crusaders are one of them, I make an exception due to them only having Restoration school as their magic, while Knights are more of a rallying spells) like Battlemage, Spellsword, Witchhunter, and even Nightblade, I'm still considering on getting both Mage or Sorcerer due to some of them actually having to tap into Conjuration for the full potential (and I kinda hate Conjuration due to how annoying the summons could be)

So yeah, right now, I'm into Spellsword, Witchhunter, Battlemage, and Nightblade (with a bit of twist by yours truly)
