Upon arriving in Riften, he learned of the Black-Briars, the highest power in Riften, second only to the Jarl, especially Maven Black-Briar - She seems to have all of Riften in her pocket. Instinctively, Ararvyne began formulating ways in which he could gain her favor in order to take advantage of such power.
She has ties to the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, two stealth-based organizations that Ararvyne can manage within. By entering (and possibly taking control of) one or both of these organizations, he can put himself higher upon the rung of favoritism for Maven.
But this would come at a later date. For now, he had training to do...
